Tapers’ recollections (Mar 2016):
"I can almost guarantee I made that recording, as there were only about 10 people there and I taped Therapy? and Adream's sets on my granddad's dictaphone and used to copy them for anyone who wanted them (and plenty who didn't). The MC was called, I think, Seamus Fitzpatrick. It was part of a club night called the Monster Club. I'm pretty sure I still have the poster somewhere. The bill was DFA (headlining), Therapy? and Adream. But, in a typical wrinkle, I wasn't on drums. My place was taken for this one gig by the drummer from Don't Kill Sheep due to, er, religious differences. Therapy? also had a sub drummer that night, Michael McKeegan's brother Charlie, from LMS. Andy Cairns let Marc from Adream use his distortion pedal. I tried to buy Therapy?'s recently released second demo off Michael afterwards, but he'd forgotten to bring any. Good times!"
Further info:
By far the earliest Therapy? live recording that has surfaced to date. Transferred from cassette to FLAC and made available by David Roy in March 2016 from a cassette given to him by Paul Branagh (Paul’s own copy). Possibly a 2nd generation cassette. David only discovered recently that his friend Andrew taped the show, and asked him for his thoughts (above). The master cassette appears to be lost. Photos of poster and cassette included in this torrent.
The track ‘Limdrip’ wasn’t listed on the tape sleeve, David asked Michael McKeegan recently if he knew the name of the track and after a search through his attic to find his copy of this tape (1st gen, no doubt!), Michael confirmed the name of the song.
I transferred the FLAC’s to WAV’s and put them through Audacity to remove any gaps.
Quality is average but still decent considering the tape is 26 years old.
There is a cut between “Fantasy Bag” and “Limdrip”, so it’s unclear if there were any more songs played in between.
Show info:
Very interesting gig - Michael’s brother Charlie stood in on drums for Fyfe Ewing, resulting in Andy handling all vocal duties which would have been very unusual at that time. Charlie would also later substitute for one-off gigs in 1999 and 2003.
A number of these songs never made it to an official release, including the tracks “Something”, “Limdrip” and “Mind Body Soul”.
“Body OD” was later reworked into “Stop It You’re Killing Me” on the 1994 Troublegum album.
“Mind Body Soul” was attempted during the 1995 Infernal Love album sessions and a brief jam of which was included on 2013’s “Gemil” box-set, but this live version is complete at over 6 minutes long. Features lyrics which would later re-appear on “Hellbelly” and “Nowhere” from Troublegum.
The intro was the MC’s attempt at humour by way of a Barry McGuigan (80’s Ulster boxer) impersonation… the crowd were not too impressed.
