Performance / Recording Notes:
Duran Duran make their return to the outdoor stage at Jimmy Kimmel Live in order to promote their latest Billboard
Top 10 album, Paper Gods. The new album has a more modern sound than 2011's brilliant retro-chic "All You Need Is Now".
The previous album largely helmed by uber-producer and Uptowner Mark Ronson really struck a chord with their core
audience with it's Rio-drenched synths and pop melodies. The latest offering much like the ill-fated "Red Carpet Massacre"
attempts to move the band forward with a more modern sound thanks to Mr. Hudson while maintaining a Notoriously classic
feel thanks to long term collaborator, Nile Rodgers. Pressure Off (represented in 2 takes here) is a brilliant single.
It's stacatto vocals and Chic rhythm guitar and funk bass lines harken back to 1986's "Notorious" and "Skin Trade". The
band runs through a pretty even set of 3 new songs and 3 classics. One of which, the mid-tempo "You Kill Me With Silence"
(a live debut?), makes effective use of Simon's melifluous tenor.
All in all it's a solid pull. Most of the between song clapping has been mitagated and there is very little chatting.
However, with that being said, I was positioned fairly close to a middle-aged dude who suffice it to say was pretty
happy to see the guys. Fortunately most of his "excitement" was not directly on mic. He did clap very loudly though.
I've done what I can to take the edge off his clapping and to judiciously edit out his shouting. Also, fades and edits
were applied in order to remove all of warm-up guy Don's (Kinnison-esque) yelling. Simon's vocal mix is completely
dominant here. Hence the minus. For those that like his vocals above all else, you're in for a fucking treat. Holy
shit that boy can still sing!
Of Note:
John plays moog bass on "Last Night In The City". Cool.
Simon's vocals completely soar on the brand new "You Kill Me With Silence". The performance is underpinned by John's
funky bass line. I believe this is the live debut of the song. I might be wrong though.
The cheese factor is still pretty high with Simon still using the pretty lame "Is There Anybody Hungry?" line.
Oh yeah, TURN IT UP LOUD!
Please support the band by purchasing their latest release "Paper Gods" or by going to see them on tour!
