Total Time ::: 1:02:45
::: Distant, cavernous & boomy but steady & with acclimitization, quite listenable. Check samples for freezeout or Winter wonder.
::: Warts: Repaired dullspots & dropouts but surely missed a few. Diginoise healed & now gone but for a couple of split second micro-glitch/echo remnants.
::: I'd written this off long ago due to DAT issues, but resuscitated it w/new technology/remastering skills.
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE: This is the Mk1 version without EQ or NR. The substantially improved Mk2 version with NR & EQ may be found elsewhere.
::: "Frankenstein" 2 years prior to official release on Edgar's "They Only Come Out At Night" album.
::: Taj Mahal opened. Almost certainly recorded by the taper but don't believe I dubbed it.
::: 2 days after the officially released 1970-04-17 London R.A.H. gig & concert.
::: Best recorded week of this vintage JW. Official releases out of London 1970-04-17, Beat Club 04-18, Montreux 04-24.
::: Apparently the day after London 1970-04-18 they flew to Germany for a "Beat Club" taping, then flew back to London.
::: Online quote, "During this European tour he plays what looks like an Epiphone Wilshire Guitar & Orange stacked amplifier".
::: This Croydon gig isn't even listed at http://yeech.altervista.org/Timeline/winter_timeline_1970.html
::: "Second Winter" LP (final album w/"Uncle" John Turner & Tommy Shannon) originally released Oct.'69 in the USA.
::: The Nice final UK gig was 1970-03-22 in this same hall, then a few German dates & they broke up after 1970-03-30 Berlin.
::: It seems like "Uncle" John Turner doesn't have a Wikipedia page. Someone should rectify that, the guy's a legend.
::: This one goes out to DIMER Rodger95 for sharing his AMAZING Johnny Winter collection. It's much appreciated.
Recording Information ::: unknown mono recorder/mike -> master mono audience tape.
Playback (circa 1995?) ::: master mono audience tape -> Sony TCD-3 DAT Recorder (LP speed) -> DAT. Playback (2018) Sony TCD-D7 -> Tascam CD-RW900 -> CD-RW -> computer -> EAC -> wavs -> Audacity [fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, pop, click, clap, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, -0.6% averaged pitch (speed) fix with single pass after frequency analysis & with pitchpipe verification, NO equalisation or noise reduction] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. First uploaded 2018-12-xx.
Line-up ::: Johnny Winter (born " John Dawson Winter III") - electric guitar, vocals // Edgar Holland Winter ("Tobacco Road" to end) - alto saxophone, organ, vocals // Tommy Shannon (born "Thomas Lafitte Smedley") - electric bass // "Uncle" John Turner - drums // Special guest on encore only: Keith Noel Emerson - organ.
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
DimeTravel 473 ::: Thanks to the original taper & trader, The Man In The Palace! ::: Corrections welcome ::: Another fine discovery found buried in a "DATS with death knolls" box in the aging archives. One of our handful of Johnny shows with Edgar Winter of this vintage (amazingly, we have several from this one week!) & no less of a guest than The Nice's Keith Emerson riding the keys on the encore, very possibly his first on-stage appearance after the dissolution of The Nice. If nothing else, check out "Mean Town Blues", it's a stunner. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace. Yrs truly, Knees
