MEGADETH - TOKYO 1988 1ST NIGHT (1CD) [ZODIAC 203]
Live at Nakano Sunplaza, Tokyo, Japan 12th July 1988 PERFECT SOUND (from Original Masters)

The world's first release of Kinney Master's superb live in Japan is here! This work was recorded on "SO FAR SO GOOD... SO WHAT! JAPAN TOUR 1988". It is an audience album from the first day, "July 12, 1988: Nakano Sun Plaza Performance". When you hear "1988" and "Nakano Sun Plaza", you may think of POWER GATE label's "IN MY HOUR OF NEED (POWER GATE-104)", but it is a different recording from that masterpiece...or rather, a different live performance. Let's check the schedule for the 1988 Japan tour here.

・July 12, 1988: Nakano Sun Plaza 【This work】
・July 13, 1988: Osaka Welfare Pension Hall
・July 14, 1988: Nakano Sun Plaza "IN MY HOUR OF NEED"
・July 15, 1988: Nakano Sun Plaza
・July 18, 1988: Nagoya City Public Hall

The above is the schedule for the second Japan tour in 1988. Of the total five, there were three performances in Tokyo, all at Nakano Sun Plaza. "IN MY HOUR OF NEED" was the third performance in Japan, and this work is the first day. The biggest point of this work is the superb quality by "Kinney Magic". "IN MY HOUR OF NEED" was a powerful sound that was close to line recording, but although this work is extremely thick, the sound is fine and beautiful on top of that. The expression "beautiful" may not be suitable for the explosive live of the thrash era, but it can't be helped because it is actually a beautiful sound. The prestigious Kinney sound is a little different from "sound board" but has a belief in outstanding clarity. While wearing a faint venue sound, the atmosphere is transparent and each instrument is beautifully separated. Unless the band's on-site PA is very roaring, it will be a very "beautiful" recording. That "Kinney style" is carried through to this work (at a special level!).

This encounter between the "Kinney Sound" and "1988 MEGADETH"... this is also an unusual match! To be honest, I didn't have high expectations for "Kinney & Slash". I thought, "Super clear roaring and explosion sound..." However! The clear atmosphere and exquisite sound of this work are exactly like the world of "SO FAR, SO GOOD... SO WHAT!" It's a little late to say this, but "SO FAR, SO GOOD... SO WHAT!" is a unique piece among the many masterpieces of MEGADETH. The main reason for this is the delay-based sound. The sound of this work reproduces that world view. The subtleties of the performance are clear, each riff stimulates the nerves, and the transparent atmosphere creates a dry and cold mood. This tour also includes German pro shots and Dutch soundboards, but when it comes to recreating the cold "world," this work stands out.

Of course, the cold sound depicts a scorching intellectual thrash. For old fans, the "Chris Poland & Gar Samuelson" duo has a special attachment, but when it comes to Japan performances, the "Jeff Young & Chuck Beeler" album wins. The performance ability that drives ferociously while also playing complex and intricate songs is a tremendous evolution that is hard to believe in just a year. Even each of the sharp and rapidly switching riffs is showered on you with super clarity.

The MC's strangely good mood is also worth listening to, as it confirms their excellent form. When they first came to Japan, there was an atmosphere of not knowing when they would lose their temper, but here, the atmosphere is dangerous in the opposite sense. The MC's tone during the breaks in the show is strangely high-spirited. "Thanks so much! This is my second time in Tokyo, we love you guys," "We've made a new album. SO FAR, SO GOOD... (audience: "SO WHAT!") Hehehe," "We were touring the US with IRON MAIDEN, but we cut it short and came to Japan," "This song is about our manager. He's a fuckin' mother fucker l')”@;¥^−#$%&. . . Liar!!!," etc. Dave Mustaine's somewhat slurred speech and super-good mood are scary. However, that "what on earth have they done?" mood tightens up as each song starts, and the riffs start to play briskly.

Furthermore, the cheers that met Mustaine were also miraculous. This is also "Kinney Magic", but although the fierce excitement is recorded super realistically, the voices of the nearby audience are not included. The roar of "Woooooo!" that roars through the venue is scorching hot, but not at all harsh to the ears. From a single grain of riff to a word of MC, to the screams of each person, it is recorded super clearly, but there is no difficulty in listening. Even the picking noise playing between songs and the roar that spreads through the venue are detailed and beautiful. To be honest, I thought that if I were to listen to thrash metal, it would be better to have a sound board directly connected to the do or a slightly louder sound. I never thought that Kinney's beautiful audience and thrash would go together so well... No, maybe it's because of the intellectual MEGADETH.

The ensemble doesn't fall apart even when the lyrics get suspicious. Intense, dangerous, and yet advanced. This is a masterpiece live album filled with MEGADETH, who somehow increased their sense of stability while increasing their punkish recklessness. After that, "1988" was a year in which they showed off their unique individuality in their history, having visited Japan many times. This is the world's first sound source that captures the scene with the finest Kinney sound. We will deliver it to you this weekend!
