Nazareth @ Portland, OR 1976-09-29 (SB)

I am sure everyone has the Van Halen and ZZ Top soundboards that just dropped. Still trying to find time for VH, meanwhile this another one I actually blasted one and half times in the past few days. There is some band calling itself Nazareth booked locally in a few months but likely bears little resemblance to this fine combo. Enjoy!

Notes:
Here we have an unheard, uncirculated soundboard recording of Nazareth during their "Crusade Of The Loud And Proud" tour in the fall of 1976. This is from an essentially undocumented mini-tour, dubbed "Crusade Of The Loud And Proud" by the band and in promotional material, separate from the dates of the larger tours that preceded and succeed it. Following a pause after their tour supporting "Close Enough For Rock 'N' Roll" to record a new album, this warm-up tour ranged from September 10 through October 3, debuting three songs from their then-unreleased follow-up album "Play 'N' The Game". The tour focused mainly hitting locations all across Canada, starting in the east and heading west, then ending with a few shows south of the border heading down along the US west coast. Not even an audience recording from these shows have circulated previously. There are a couple incomplete Nazareth 1976 board tapes already out there, but they are from two different album tour promotions, one in February and one in June.

Other than the vocal mic feed being ever so slightly overblown during the first three minutes (after which you may subtly notice the engineer adjusts the level to better compensate), this is a really great sounding recording. The then-unreleased songs featured in the setlist are Born To Love, I Want To Do Everything For You, and L.A. Girls. The encore ends with a cover of Tush by ZZ Top, a Nazareth live staple for many years.

Nazareth isn't a well documented live band, which is a shame because their music was quite good. Live recordings are sparse, and many tour dates are not easily found online. After this recording prompted deep research, more than 20 undocumented Nazareth shows from 1975 and 1976 were added to setlist.fm for better public documentation. Much of their early touring history is still undocumented.

This is essentially the raw transfer, since I overall prefer doing as little editing as possible. Only a speed adjustment and minor amplification was applied. The manual azimuth adjustment was done by briefly listening to the tape playing into a mono feed, with stereo headphones.

Enjoy the music and be grateful we are able hear these special recordings. If you have uncirculated tapes, please consider sharing them before they end up forever lost to time.

    1. One member. They did put out a new album in 2022 but as of a few weeks ago zero songs in the setlist. Might check it out but considering the reserved seating shows sold about 6 tickets each last I looked not confident the shows will actually happen.
