Rainbow 53rd Anniversary (clips and commentary only)
Not going to wait on when or if I have it all together to say my piece on last weekend's event so I will regurgitate some of my notes now.
Michael Monroe is the greatest and least famous rock star who ever lived. A little over 40 years after his first attempt to play LA he is finally getting the respect he deserves and headlining a somewhat major event. And having seen him in small clubs all the way to the 8000 capacity Helsinki Ice Hall, the Michael Monroe show is pretty much the exact opposite of the conventional wisdom in that the bigger the stage the better the show. This album should have done for him what fate and a drunk driver prevented Hanoi Rocks from doing. One of my only fond memories from a year living in Orange County was getting KNAC and hearing these songs on the radio, Man With No Eyes being one of my favorites.
I also remember being on the bus to a casino in Gardena in late 2004 and seeing Hanoi Rocks at the Key Club in the LA Weekly. I was trembling and even considering turning back and getting a ticket but I was able to wait til 2am when I got home to make the purchase. Unfortunately that show never happened and it was several more years until I had a chance to see him.
He has a 3 year visa now so hopefully he will be coming back again soon.

Black Oak Arkansas was just so delightfully bizarre.
As they were setting up someone said to me look it's Ed Mundell from Monster Magnet.
Then Jim Dandy is helped to the stage, sits down and starts ranting and raving and I have no idea what he is saying and next thing they are playing Monster Magnet's Space Lord Motherfucker. A lot of times he is just howling and screaming while the band is playing whatever. He talks about taking acid in New Orleans, falling down and "cum coming out of dick" and then they are playing Hendrix's Bold As Love. I would so go see a headline show. Michael Monroe and Steve Conte were watching sidestage and totally digging it. Can't wait to see again.

All eyes were on Faster Pussycat for reasons I don't need to go into. And it was the best Faster Pussycat show I have seen since the 1990's. Not just Taime rising to the occasion and delivering a solid set, but really impressed with guitarist Sam Bam Koltun's playing, especially on Ain't No Way Around It. I'm used to just respectable sheet music note by note recitations when I see the older acts without original lineups, but he really gave that song a life of it's own beyond the album version without stepping all over it. I was thinking he is the kind of guy who may someday be more in demand as a player for major acts and this was before I found out he did the set right after returning from a Godsmack tour. Now on tour with Dorothy.

Had tickets to the Roxy show before Razzle was killed(one more reason to hate Motley Crue)...Saw Monroe at Jezebel's in Anaheim couple years later...he truly is a legend. Jealous of your Finland trip.
ReplyDeleteAlso Dorothy didn't have Sam Koltun at the El Rey show. Did he jump back into her band? That dude can rock (although the guy at El Rey did a decent job as well)
As always thanks for sharing...wolf
I was just gonna go back and check out the El Rey to see though no one in that band really stood out. But he is definitely on the tour.
