Nuggets is, of course, the legendary garage-rock compilation put together by Lenny Kaye in 1972, later expanded into a series and a box set. For its 50th anniversary (more or less), Lenny and some of his favorite co-conspirators put together an all-star cast of guest vocalists, listed above in the setlist, for two packed nights (this is night one) of celebration at the City Winery NYC — extra packed, in fact, as the usual tables were pushed aside in much of the venue to make way for a standing-room crowd.
The songs, pulled from the various Nuggets editions, are needless to say all classics, and the performances and stories here are every bit as good as one would hope from a night that kicked off with Patti Smith singing the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)." This was recorded from the balcony, so there isn't much close crowd noise, and the excellent City Winery sound system made for a nice recording.
