- December 12, 2018 cleanup upgrade -
Second of two shows (the 1st was on July 29th in hard rain, this went down in sunny weather with cockroaches running across the stage). Complete show, first generation copies with flutter-free end part.
CONTRAST CLAUSE RE torrent #577571 (uploaded Nov. 25, 2016, currently off the tracker):
a) This show now has „Magic Bus“ seamlessly spliced together from the two different sources (with a few overlapping seconds from the lesser source edited out), plus comes with
b) a general cleanup of the entire recording (clicks & pops removed, side noises reduced or removed, encompassing level auto-boost and equalisation; back cover artwork adjusted).
With repeated BIG TIME thanks to long-time collector Larry "Florida Kid" Clark who provided the source tapes and did the two fresh 2016 transfers!

Sound quality is far better than the old "Such a Night" vinyl bootleg, I'd rate it vg+ or 3 out of 6.
Check mp3 audio sample in comments for proof.

BACKSTORY:
For those who may have missed out on the previous 2009 and 20016 torrents, here’s the recap of the little anorak story behind the recording and its different versions: Mind that I got as well the recording as the essential info from my long time-trading pal Larry who recorded a lot of NYC shows back in the early 70’s (such as the 28/8/1970 Savoy Brown/Fleetwood Mac/Fairport Convention night for one). Thanks a big lot again, Larry, for this show and for all your first-hand info.
Larry and the actual taper of the Forest Hills Who show had become friends after they first met about one year after the Who's Forest Hills concert, at John Lennon's "One-To-One", Madison Square Garden, 30/8/1972, late show. They were sitting next to each other and discovered they were both taping that show! Cool, eh? At that point, Larry had not had the Forest Hills recording but the original taper was so nice and eventually lent Larry his two Who cassette tapes to copy them to his (Larry's) open reel tape.
The first and major portion of the show was taped on a 90min. TDK SD cassette, and you can clearly hear the tape change to a Maxell tape just before “My Generation” some 80 min. into the show. From there, the sound is audibly inferior, perhaps because the recording head of the tape deck wasn't biased as well to the Maxell cassette.
Both master tape cassettes originally ran OK. Early in the copying process however, both were obviously lent to different people. One of them apparently never cleaned his tape heads and rollers etc. so the 2nd cassette did not run smoothly and developed wow and flutter virtually from the start, i.e. from the beginning of "My Generation". That was the version that unfortunately got into wider cassette tape trading/swapping circulation - either in complete state or incomplete on C 90 cassettes where “Magic Bus” was cut midway through.
As far as Larry (and I) knew, there was only ever one source tape for this show in common circulation; in fact, in all my previous c. 25 years of trading/swapping, I had come across quite a few different copies but they all clearly originated from the same flutter-stricken source tape.
A few years down the road and up the analog copy generation lineage such a 90 min. copy version was used for the “Such A Night” vinyl bootleg, that was most probably released in the 2nd half of the 70's. For that, the bootleggers chopped off the “Magic Bus” portion after “My Generation”, and (mis)placed it at the end of side 2 of their double album, i.e. in the middle of the actual set. Plus, they claimed on their cover the show took place on September 31 (yo, sure!), 1971 though I think their time specification of “10pm” sounds pretty likely. I still used their not-so-common-for-its-time deluxe two-colour cover for my artwork for its bootleg charm and the old glorious vinyl times' sake.
However, and most thankfully, the said two master cassettes were also lent to a more skilled person who made his own copy which resulted in the second tape running OK. He just started the tape a wee bit too late so the very first few notes of “My Generation” are missing from this otherwise good sounding version. That version unfortunately wasn't circulated that widely, if at all and served as the source for my first 2009 torrent of this show. That gave us Whonatix the first opportunity to finally listen to this night’s monster version of “Naked Eye” without bleeding ears.
In 2016 Larry finally got hold of a mint condition TEAC 1230 reel-to-reel
player that gave him the opportunity to do fresh transfers of the two tapes and that proved a sonic upgrade for both parts and *especially* for the hitherto subpar second part. He was so nice and provided me with the resulting version so I was able to torrent that upgrade to Dime on Nov. 25, 2016.
Since that torrent has just dropped off the tracker, I thought I’d best use the opportunity to now torrent a slightly but audably cleaned-up version of this show (for details see contrast clause and lineage info).
And what we now - and again – have at hand is one of The 'Orrible 'Oooos best ever shows in best possible, flutter-, and crackle-free quality... Can it get any better? Well, not for me, at least.
Please do NOT even think of trying to sell this show or spreading it in lossy formats - otherwise: enjoy, trade, share!
