This marks the third installment from the ML Archive, a collection of master recordings made by one of Jared’s oldest taping friends. Newly transferred and torrented, these stereo recordings neatly complement Jared’s own. Indianapolis was show number six on The Who’s 1982 tour of North America, played at Market Square Arena on September 29. It’s a good outing and a really good recording.
Coincidentally, Indianapolis was the first show I heard that year. Jared sent copies in care of our good friend and Who Fan #1 Dr. Billy. You can imagine what that did for my 14-year-old ego: "I’ve heard tapes of The Who playing a couple weeks ago in Indiana, and they’re really good!"
It’s a shorter show by just a bit (they omit “Twist and Shout” at the end) and Jared conveyed that perhaps they felt the demands of a tour setting in; they sounded alright but weren’t terribly animated. That makes it an intriguing candidate for playback: nothing to see here, but nonetheless it remains a fine representation of 1982 — one with really nice sound, too.
Even nights that weren’t spectacular have excellent moments — I discovered a couple interesting bits during file prep, and earmarked others for closer inspection (I’m looking at you, “Naked Eye” outro). Thus far, I’m impressed with “The Quiet One” and “It’s Hard.” If the band chose where to go all in, they did so wisely; these versions would be shoo-ins for a tour best-of.
And listen for an Easter egg: a fan celebrating his birthday held up a sign requesting a song The Who hadn’t played for ages. They oblige — for a few bars, anyway! “It’s as much as we know these days,” Roger Daltrey joked. (The interlude appears at the end of a track around 2⁄3 of the way through the file set.) Be surprised!
Thanks to my friends at JEMS, and once again, BK for acquiring, transferring, and mastering. Another hat tip to ML for this terrific series. There’s more to come.
And to Jared, thanks for keeping us rolling all these years.
Share it freely, and for free!
