Welcome to the 40th anniversary of The Who’s 1982 tour! We’re happy to mark the occasion with a round of uncirculated recordings made by our dear friend, Jared Houser. He saw all 40 dates in North America that year, taping nearly each one, providing thorough documentation of the music as he went.

The Who had performed a couple of warm-up gigs in the UK before its so-called “Farewell Tour” began in earnest in Landover (just outside of Washington, D.C.). Many shows played in open-air stadiums, from New York to Oakland.

Much of what distinguished the band’s stage act that year plays back right here in superb quality — headphones, please! Part of the attraction was new music: six songs from ‘Face Dances’ and ‘It’s Hard’ make the set, which the band generally stuck by as the tour went on.

Moreover, the shows that year were basically great! Townshend was straight and spirited, which set the standard. On this night, Jared wrote, “we couldn’t believe that they were already playing this well, and it was only the second show of the tour.”

Aside from “Eminence Front” coming ahead of “It’s Hard,” the set list appears in its familiar order, and includes “The Punk Meets the Godfather” and “A Man Is a Man.” The two-song encore featured strong versions of “Young Man Blues” and “Naked Eye,” which ends, Jared recalled, in a way the band hadn’t played since 1971, with Pete strumming a few quiet chords before the music builds back to a final crescendo. “This encore was awesome and left us a bit shaken,” he wrote. “How much better could they play than this?!” With a variety of recordings from 1982, we’ve heard the answer many times over.

A shout-out to my friends in JEMS: BK, for keeping all the planes flying, and in this instance, mjk5510, for bang-up mastering work. He turned this one around with distinction, opening up the top end and making Jared’s mono recording sound more like stereo.

Jared helped pioneer concert recording, and we remember his friendship, wit, and knowledge. There’s no better way to celebrate our times with him than with his own field recordings, especially from a tour he thought so highly of.

Share it freely, and for free!
