Welcome to the first in a series of recordings from the ML Archive. One of Jared’s oldest taping friends got in touch not long ago with the offer of dozens of his own master tapes of Who shows. Getting file sets up and out begins with a rock-solid recording from the 1982 tour in Orchard Park, New York, a suburb to the southeast of Buffalo.
September 26 was the fourth date in North America that year. Jared recalled an all-night drive from Philadelphia (where the band had played the afternoon of the 25th), and stood ready to “dismiss this show right off, but were we ever wrong!” Punctuated by Pete Townshend’s guitar placing high in the mix (please join us in a resounding “YES!”), the band was “cooking from the word ‘go.’”
Of course, Jared recorded this one too, but the ML version is in stereo (for much of the tour, Jared used a single Teac M-100). ML sported an old JEMS favorite, the stalwart Aiwa CM-30 single point stereo mic. We could write a whole chapter on this punch-above-its-weight mic and its contributions over the years, but for now, let’s get back to Rich Stadium: nearby, you won’t hear much in the way of chatter, as field position favored capture of the good stuff.
With three shows under their belt, muscle memory hadn’t taken hold. Sure, a couple flubs emerge, but more often the early-in-the-tour instincts result in a great performance. Listen for smaller details, like different keyboard tones or a Kenney Jones drum fill. The big picture stuff is there, too: “Drowned” sounds compelling, as the band jams to find the arrangement in real time. Songs from Quadrophenia and It’s Hard make up slightly less than half the set.
Did they get better as the tour went on? Of course. But the magic came out here for sure. Even the weather contributed, making a rainy “Love Reign O’er Me” one to remember (hence Roger’s remarks afterward). And did we mention that Pete’s guitar sounds louder in the mix? Maybe Bob Pridden knew that Townshend was dialed in and had him turned up in the house. Who knows?
Jared always had good things to say about gigs The Who played in Buffalo. And his tapes
(December ‘79; July ‘89) reveal just as much. We’ll surely reach for his 1982 entry in time. For now, let’s welcome the ML Archive. It’s the whole show, one that had Jared’s stamp of approval. We hope you enjoy it as much as he did.
From acquisition to transfer to mastering, BK handled the heavy lifting here. Thanks to him and my friends at JEMS, and of course to our friend Jared. We miss him, and as we enter a new golden age for field recordings like this, we appreciate his friendship and contributions even more. And to ML for a whole new recording and series, thank you! There’s more to come.
Share it freely, and for free!
