JOE'S MEMORIES:
Mick Ralphs had left Mott The Hoople, in August, to form Bad Company and was replaced on this tour by Luther Grosvenor (now known as Ariel Bender), formerly the lead guitarist for the band
Spooky Tooth. The setlist for this performance was the same as for the previous shows on this tour, with Luther adding a bit more "power' to the guitar sound.
Songs from the "All The Young Dudes" and the new album, "Mott" made up most of the setlist, starting the show with "Drivin' Sister", "Sucker" and their cover of the Velvet Underground's
"Sweet Jane". The ballad, "Hymn For The Dudes", slowed things down a bit, but the energy level went back up, with "All The Way From Memphis" and the song that used to be their encore,
"Sweet Angeline", from the classic "Brain Capers" album. "Rose" was another quiet song and they followed that with their biggest hit, "All The Young Dudes",
the David Bowie song that saved the band from obscurity. "One Of The Boys" and "Rock And Roll Queen", two of my favorite Mott The Hoople songs, ended the set.
For the encore, we got to hear Ariel Bender really show his stuff, on an extended seven minute jam of "Walking With A Mountain", one of the best songs from their 1970 "Mad Shadows" album.
His lead guitar work is showcased on this song, with a couple of solos included. This was Mott The Hoople at their peak!
Many Many Thanks To Joe

JOE'S MEMORIES:
Aerosmith was the second act on the triple bill of Gentle Giant, Aerosmith and Mott The Hoople. They did an excellent high energy set, playing for their "hometown" audience.
The band took their places on stage and did some tuning up, before being introduced by WBCN radio personality J.J. Jackson. And Steve Tyler was in the spotlight, wearing a,
Mick Jagger style, glittering blue and silver bodysuit and a big, floppy, straw hat. He was a sight to see! Starting with three songs from their debut album, "Make It", "Write Me A Letter"
and "Somebody", they continued with a new song, called, "Son Of Shit" (later changed to "S.O.S.(Too Bad) to keep the Columbia Records execs happy), from their upcoming new album.
Their big hit, "Dream On" followed, along with Steve's "Thank you!" to the audience for making it a success. "One Way Street" and the Rufus Thomas classic, "Walkin' The Dog"
led into their cover of "Train Kept A-Rollin'", with "Mama Kin" ending the set. They had to come back out for their Boston, so for their encore number, they did another new song,
"Pandora's Box" and brought another great Aerosmith performance to a close. A great, early moment in time, for a band that would go on to international fame.
Many Many Thanks To Joe
