The Who's 1982 Halloween performance in Tempe, Arizona, marks the fourth installment from the ML Archive, a collection of master recordings made by one of Jared’s oldest taping friends. Newly transferred and torrented, these stereo recordings neatly complement Jared’s own (which he made that year in mono). Already, we've shared ML's work from Orchard Park, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis.

Tempe sounds great: made within a short distance from the PA, it plays clean and hasn't much in the way of distractions. And even though Tempe wasn't a top-tier '82 show — after 25 dates, the band was surely looking forward to a month-long break — the performance gets better as it goes along. After a few miscues in the first half, the pacing tightens up considerably; by the end, a superb encore closes the show on a series of strong notes.

Moreover, the set features several numbers that appeared as the tour's first leg unfolded. Which fan or collector wouldn't want to hear a broadly representative '82 performance in outstanding quality, especially when it features "I Can See For Miles," "Tattoo," and "Young Man Blues"?

If Tempe has circulated in the BitTorrent age, its stealth is remarkable: a recent list of 1982 dates showed ISO ("in search of") for this one. Its appearance fills in one of the last pieces of the '82 puzzle — "for completists only" in the best sense.

Thanks to my friends at JEMS, and once again BK for serving as executive producer. Another hat tip to ML for this terrific series — muchas gracias!

And of course, we salute Jared, a friend whose impact on our taping thing was overshadowed only by his kindness and wit. He'd send envelopes full of master tapes in the mail — "just get them back to me in one piece," he'd say. Pretty amazing stuff for a 15-year-old kid back then. Still is, in fact.

Share it freely, and for free!
