Merry Mexmas with El Vez & The Centuries + Duderella + Santa Sabbath @ Lodge Room 2025-12-22

LIMITED TIME / LAST TIME

https://pixeldrain.com/l/ABvUnRa9

Due to the timeliness of the subject matter, we are not waiting until Friday for this new release.

But, sorry kids, the El Vez set ain't what it should be but still clear and listenable.

Santa Sabbath was the main draw for me so I accepted the offered guest list slot and plus one and easily found a ride both ways. Sat down in the back before Duderella and was just going to stay sitting but they sounded okay enough to get up and move toward the front. But for El Vez I had to request ADA which is not in a sonically advantageous spot so don't get your hopes too high for 2026 - most GA places I do not dig the ADA area but I just can't stand for hours anymore.

A few weeks prior I was leaning against the wall in front of the board at the Teragram and tripped over my own feet and fell sideways almost taking down the person next to me before I caught myself. All while standing still. And then left a few songs early to catch the bus, which never came. So I am just not going to do standing / multi acts bills anymore. For some stuff where I can really groove with the music like Santa Sabbath I am fine. But it requires a high level of familiarity, even some bands I have seen multiple times I still can't pick any members out of a lineup or been earwormed by a single song. I can alleviate some of the pain if I can remember to do my 500 abdominals a day but it doesn't help with the balance. And who wants to do that?

Same thing a few weeks ago, went to a multi-act show where I really just wanted to see the first band and the last band. The 2nd band was good, the third band was terrible and then I found out there were five bands, not four. Almost walked out right then. Even though I had a chair in front of the PA, I spotted a couch to the side of the stage and behind the PA. It was very comfortable, to the point I was semi-sleeping, but sounded terrible. When the highly anticipated by the rest of my crew 5th band took the stage I ignored them trying to coax me back to a decent taping spot. So that's the status of archiving live music going into 2026.

I recently read about a fish sandwich in the LA Times at a spot in San Gabriel called Bopomofo Cafe that's supposed to be a superior take on the Filet O'Fish. I couldn't stop thinking about it. So a few days ago I spent hours on public transportation going there and back while getting a few longform podcasts off my phone. It was good, but the Veggie Mapo Tots were absolutely divine. With espresso drink and tip I spent $43. Worth every penny. This is coming from someone who just doesn't eat out and proclaims to hate restaurant food. There is a Hollywood location I will go to but they didn't have the fish sandwich on the menu. This is the kind of adventure I hope to have more of in 2026.

My friend filmed the show, both shows actually, maybe I will get it in time for next Christmas and El Vez San Francisco is on Dime anyway, probably in excellent quality.

Comments

  1. I actually know the bass player for Santa Sabbath. His real name is Pat Hoed, but his wrestling announcer name is Larry Rivera when he does XPW Wrestling. He's also in that narco Mexican rap group Brujeria as Fantasma. He's been in dozens of punk and metal bands in the LA area.
