I’m uploading this show in response to a chance email I received from someone who had seen my video of
‘Baba O’Riley’ on YouTube and asked if I knew if any other bootleg material existed, seeing as The Who themselves
have an official audio/visual recording that so far has remained unreleased. I am amazed that no other recordings
appear to have circulated, so I am making a recording that my mate made for me available here for the first time.
Here is some background information about my day in Leeds and also about the recording…
I had 2 tickets for this show, one that I used myself and the other one I gave to my mate on the understanding
that he would make an audio recording for me with his mini-disc recorder. It was a really hot day and I went
down to the Refectory in Leeds mega early leaving my mate to make his own way later in the evening. When I got
to the University there were lots of film crews around covering the event for local and national news, so there
was quite a buzz happening even at 3.00pm in the afternoon. I joined the queue right outside the barrier near
the entrance to the Uni and someone told me that Pete and Roger would be coming out to unveil the blue plaque
commemorating their appearance there in 1970. This was an added bonus for me as I didn’t know anything about it
and I made a few short vids of them making a speech and unveiling the plaque and then just waited in the queue
for showtime, chatting to other fans and I even ended up on the news in the background on one of the TV spots.
Inside the venue it was so hot that the walls were dripping with condensation and the venue filled up until it
was packed to capacity. I was near to the front and glad that I had taken the trouble to go early. I had seen
The Who on lots of occasions over the years but never had a view like this before in such a small venue.
When Pete and Rog came onstage I felt such emotion well up inside me I nearly cried with happiness,
very embarrassing for a man who was 42 at the time! Both Pete and Roger refer to the heat in the venue with
Pete commenting “I might fuck off and take a breather... this is fucking heart attack stuff... but I won’t be
the cunt that has the heart attack, it’ll be one of you poor fuckers down there!”
After the show I found my mate waiting outside and he told me he had trouble finding the venue and nearly went
home! (He is not a WHO fan!) He missed most of the first song but managed to record the rest of the show.
Because I had always assumed that The Who would officially release this show I never listened to my mate’s
recording and was happy with the memory of what had been a fantastic day. I put the recording in a drawer at
home and left it there until I received the email from a Who fan in the USA a few days ago. It prompted me to
dig the recording out and initially I couldn’t find it as I hadn’t put a sticker on it so it was unmarked.
I then thought that my mate hadn’t taped the encore as the mini-disc recording finished after ‘See Me Feel Me’
and my mate could clearly be heard exiting the venue. I then spent the rest of the day feeling really gutted
until I put another unmarked mini-disc in the player and realised he had split the show over 2 discs! It was
like finding the Holy Grail! What a relief!
The recording itself is nice and clear and apart from missing half of the first song (‘Who Are You’), some
inevitable audience chatter and my mate moving about a bit to get in a better position, it is very good.
I thought the band were on good form for a ‘warm up’ show (no pun intended) and were in very good humour.
In the space of 10 days I saw The Who twice in Leeds, once in the tiny Refectory (canteen) at Leeds Uni and again
at the O2 Wireless Festival. I enjoyed the Festival show but it was nowhere near as special as the University
show and it will always remain one of the most memorable days of my life.
So finally, here it is for you all to enjoy. Sorry for the long wait!!!!
Thank you!
