JOE'S MEMORIES:
Rod and the Faces were the headliners of the three act show of, Cactus, Badfinger and The Faces and they were in great form for this show.
It was the first date of the American tour and they were ready to rock America in full Faces glory.
The original lineup of the band was still intact and they performed all the songs that a Faces fan could have asked for,
covering material from the "A Nod Is As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse" album, through "Gasoline Alley", "Long Player" and "Every Picture Tells A Story".
This was the Faces at their peak, having a great time on stage and putting all their "ragged" energy into the music. Opening with "It's All Over Now",
they set the pace of the set and continued with great versions of "Miss Judy's Farm", "Memphis, Tennessee" and "Stay With Me",
just slowing down a bit between those jems to do "Maggie May" and Jimi Hendrix's "Angel". After rocking out on "True Blue" and "Too Bad",
the did a medley of "That's All You Need"/"Gasoline Alley" and followed that up with The Temptation's "(I Know )I'm Losing You"
and closed the set with Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed". The crowd clapped and cheered for more and the Faces did not disappoint,
with a medley of "Had Me A Real Good Time"/"Every Picture Tells A Story", then slowed it down again for a nice rendition of Etta James'
"I'd Rather Go Blind". And just think, this three band show had ticket prices of $4.50, $5.50 and $6.50. Even in "1972 dollars",
that was a great bargain!  And my "fraying" microphone cord, that had caused numerous sound "dropouts" during the Cactus set,
and Faces performance.

Many Many Thanks To Joe

JOE'S MEMORIES:
Badfinger was the second band of this three act show of Cactus, Badfinger and Faces with Rod Stewart.
It was the first show of the tour and there seemed to be some problems with the sound the band was hearing from the monitors,
as well as some out of tune guitar strings. Unfortunately, they were limited to a five song, 25 minute set,
so we didn't get to hear all the Badfinger "hits" that we had expected.  I had seen Badfinger in 1970,
when they were just hitting it big in America and they were an opening band at that time, too, on another three band bill of,
Badfinger, Black Sabbath and Mungo Jerry (What? Go figure.). They opened their set with "Baby Blue",
but that was the only "Top 40" song that they did. They followed it with three "mellow" songs that slowed the pace of their performance.
They closed with a great 10 minute version of "Suitcase" that gave all the members of the band a chance to show their individual musicianship.
It would have been nice if they had been given a longer time slot, so they could have done more Badfinger "classics",
but it was good to see the original lineup of the band for a second time. And the "fraying" microphone cord on my recorder,
that I didn't know about until I played the tapes, miraculously seemed to stay together throughout their set and didn't cause any sound dropouts,
like it did during the Cactus performance.

Many Many Thanks To Joe

JOE'S MEMORIES:
Cactus was the opening band for the three act show of Cactus, Badfinger and Faces with Rod Stewart.
It was the first night of the tour and it seemed that things were still being worked out with sound and staging.
Unfortunately, that limited their time on stage, so they only did a 25 minute, four song set.
They opened with my favorite Cactus song, "Bedroom Mazurka" and closed with a great version of "Swim".
It wasn't the full set that we had looked forward to, but it was great to see Carmine and Tim after the Vanilla Fudge years.
Unfortunately, I didn't know that the microphone cord for my recorder was beginning to fray, so there are serious dropouts
in sound throughout the whole recording and I was very disappointed when I heard the playback.
Since the Rolling Stones were coming to the Garden 17 days later, I made sure to get a new mic for that show.

Many Many Thanks To Joe
