This file set features the ML Archive Master recording of The Who's final 1980 date, played outdoors on a hot summer day at Toronto’s CNE Stadium. Having gigged two nights in May at Maple Leaf Gardens, the band gave Toronto fans a real treat: a third show in as many months.
One such fan is ML, a good friend of Jared’s and his early, stalwart taping ally. We’re nearing the end of a year-long project to transfer ML's cassette library, posting the better ones as we go. By now, you've surely enjoyed one of ML's fine 1982 tour recordings like Los Angeles, Indianapolis, or Orchard Park (we've posted ten so far).
July 16 is his first 1980 recording to circulate via BitTorrent. It’s a fine representative of the shows that year, and sounds particularly good on “Music Must Change” and “Five-Fifteen.” Both feature the three-horn section that augmented the band’s stage show and allowed them to present a broad range of material.
Roger Daltrey takes the entire lead vocal for “Naked Eye,” and in the encore, a celebratory “Dancing in the Street” pairs up with “Dance It Away,” an original they’d begun to work up the year before (a more formal version appeared as a B-side to Pete Townshend’s “Uniforms” single in 1982; a demo circulates, too).
Aside from Pete's shout-out to the English beer and tobacco readily available in Toronto, the band doesn't sound particularly sentimental about the tour ending. Throughout, they play well and the crowd response is sustained. At the end, Roger drops a verse in "The Real Me" — whether the band came in too soon or he just plain forgot? We'll never know. As the saying goes, that's rock 'n' roll!
Checked against Jared’s master, we deduced that the mic arrays were deployed in different areas. ML reports that he used a borrowed deck — or more precisely, sat with its owner while ML tended the recording. They situated themselves about a third of the way back, just off the floor, house left (John's side). Tape flips omit short bits in "Drowned" and "Naked Eye" — fades applied for a smooth transition, with no patches. (Jared’s recording torrents as a third-generation copy, which omits “Naked Eye” in the track listing.)
I had a great time with this one. In addition to ML of course, it's the result of a team effort: BK provided key research, while mjk5510 helped even the sound. And it’s all in good time: for that, we thank goody for pitch correction. Much appreciated!
The Who ended several tours in Toronto, always on a good note. Here’s a fine example.
