Continuing to mine the personal archives yielded a nice surprise this week. The New York Dolls at the Felt Forum opening for Mott The Hoople. 

While researching this show I found what appeared to be the most common circulating version cuts off during "Trash" and is missing the last two songs. After previewing the incomplete version on youtube this copy out of my archives is not only complete but a substantial upgrade. This does not mean a complete version has not been shared in the past but I was not able to easily find a source for it.

I would argue this is a vitally important show to Rock & Roll history. the forerunner to punk rock, the New York Dolls influenced countless band and helped launch a whole genre of music. Their rising star would be fleeting after Mercury Records dropped them and Malcolm McLaren would destroy their image within a year. What he was able to do with Sex Pistols a year later completely backfired with the Dolls.

On this night they were home, in their element, in front of an adoring NY crowd supporting probably the greatest glam-rock band ever. Todd Rundgren was working with the band at this time and attended this show, in the notes for the posting I found it mentioned he introduces the band. However, a comment on a forum board noted that Todd introduced Wolfman Jack who introduced the band. I'd say it's clearly Wolfman Jack at introducing here and not Todd Rundgren.

The capture is very good for the era and what was likely an extremely loud show, it is a vital historical document.
