Lollapalooza 1996 @ Irvine Meadows 1996-08-03 + 1996-08-04 (Metallica, Soundgarden, Devo, Ramones, Rancid, Jonny Polonsky)
This was a fascinating chapter of the new Lolla book. They were mainly booking out of the way places as not to cannibalize the draw for Metallica's upcoming arena tour. However some of those cities just were not selling. Turns out people really do just want to go to the venues they know instead of a field in the middle of nowhere. For the longest time this was between Indio and Bakersfield (!!) before just settling on Irvine Meadows again. Though reported as sold out it was not a tough ticket and they were selling at the box office day of show. By this time the fix was in on Metallica and their fans knew years of touring would follow the release of Load so they were possibly not quite the draw they otherwise would have been.
Posting one more time.

This was originally transferred as a 2 CD set with the Whisky show as filler so leaving completely intact.

Day 1 - I wasn't into the Screaming Trees so I headed over to the 2nd stage to see what was going on. Saw a great Jonny Polonsky set during which he overshot the microphone and fell right off the stage. Enjoyed the Jonny Polonsky set so much I went back the next day and saw him again.
Apparently my activity was somewhat obvious as some dude tried to blackmail me out of my hat before eventually disappearing. You can hear him yelling "BOOTLEGGER." Was also approached by a U.S. Marshall (the ones who have a court injunction to impound illegal merchandise) who saw me hiding the recording equipment. Couldn't really think of any way to BS my way out of it so I told him it was recording equipment. Then I said I have the Melvins permission to record (personally approved by the band a month prior). He asked why I was hiding it. I told him security might not let me in with it. He seemed to accept that. Doubtful the injunction would have covered my recorder but he still could have caused a problem for me. Two close calls but thankfully I got just about everything I could that day. Except the Melvins who played the same time as the Ramones. (I do believe the Melvins set was webcast but could be wrong)
What a weird lineup. Ramones 3rd to last show and best of the three. Got more (but not as much) the next day and the Devo set was officially released on DVD.
