Black Sabbath + Yes + Wild Turkey @ San Bernardino, CA 1972-03-17

Black Sabbath Live At The San Bernardino Swing Auditorium, 1972-03-17, Complete Show, Master AUD reel-to-reel (first time in circulation)

This show contains rare, alternate lyrics for two songs.

To start out with, I have been trying to document the other performances from this date since the posting of the Wild Turkey torrent some time back. The original taper was not pristine in taking down notes on the box, and he has occasionally been wrong before. Although both Black Sabbath and Wild Turkey were labeled "Swing", there were no dates on the boxes, and the Wild Turkey show was on a seperate reel altogether. Finally, I can confirm the existence of the tape which is represented here. I can now also state definitively that this Black Sabbath show is from the 1972 San Bernardino Swing show, and has never appeared before. I can also tell you although it has no label at all, the Yes portion has also been located. Together with the help of Rob Dwyer's SabbathLive.Com and from Mr. Dwyer personally, plus archival material from ForgottenYesterdays.com about this show, all other dates and venues were eliminated in a fashion similar to a Su Doku puzzle. This is definitely it, there can be no other choices.

In case you are confused, the following acts appeared:

Wild Turkey
Yes
Black Sabbath (I may have the order slightly wrong, Yes may have come first)

A rough mp3 of this show was sent to Rob Dwyer, and a review of it appears on SabbathLive.com. I want to thank him personally for all the positive encouragement. He was a true gentleman to deal with. From the conversations with him, I'd also like to present you with... sort of a mathematical equation, something to think about:

Share The Music               Rarity of Single Show Tape
-------------------     =     -----------------------------
Preserve The Rarity           Rarity of Tapes of Entire Tour

To me, anyway: It's one thing if the particular show is uncirculated, and there are other representations of this music recorded live from this time period, it's quite another thing if no other tapes have appeared at all from a particular band's tour. If it's another show from an already documented tour, usually I don't see a problem to post the material.

As a side note to all you Yes fans -  I am still not sure how much of the Yes I actually have, but that recording is most likely incomplete. They appear to have played for 90 minutes, but at most there is only 50 of it. There appear to be two seperate tapes, and both are unlabeled as to venue (but both are in fact this show). There also may be some duplication of material, which will further reduce the running time. It will take a while to sort that part out, but rest assured, the Yes will be posted once it's all put together. For a recollection of the Yes portion, visit ForgottenYesterdays.com.

Yes Live At The San Bernardino Swing Auditorium 1972-03-17 master reel-to-reel AUD tape (first time in circulation) Opener for Black Sabbath with mp3 sample

The Black Sabbath portion of this evening is still an active torrent with many seeders: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=107684&hit=1

The Wild Turkey portion of this evening is also active, with several seeders:
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=104661&hit=1

Here then finally is the final portion of this incredible evening. The hype about this show on ForgottenYesterdays.com is true...

This show is to die for.

I want to personally thank the following Dime members for help in reconstructing this tape:

Five for supplying samples of another show for comparison
The Toole Man for additional help

As indicated in previous torrents, the Yes portion lay in two unrelated pieces. Although the music itself seemed to overlap, something was wrong with the performance in both. At first I wasn't even sure they were the same show. The problem ended up being that there was a master and a copy. The master was pitched 29 cents too slow, and the copy was pitched about twice that too fast. One of the properties of speeding up music is that the recording will sound better, up to a point. All the frequencies move up; the recording sounds crisper. So, the copy initially sounded better than the original.

Once the speed was corrected on the original, it sounded almost as good as the copy. But, once the copy was corrected, the original was much better. I hope that makes sense, we are talking cents of change here, not semitones (100 cents = 1 semitone). SoundForge 6.0 was used for all processes.

The 48 minutes here are I have of this show. The rumors are that they played for 90 minutes, but there don't appear to be any missing portions. An anti-alias filter was applied during speed correction (Google "Nyquist Frequency" if you are curious as to why). Multiple EQ passes were also used to bring out the finer details of the music. No noise reduction was used. Over 8 hours of work went into this torrent over the course of about five weeks, I hope you enjoy it.

Yes played the "Fragile" portions of this show very close to the vest. It's much more of an extended album feast than present day shows are. The performance is *wonderful*, with some drug-related taper talk thrown into the mix.

Setlist:

Firebird Suite
Roundabout
Heart Of The Sunrise
The Clap
Perpetual Change
I've Seen All Good People/Your Move Medley

Lineage: read text above. Flac Frontend, level 6, sectors aligned and verified.

Enjoy!

Wild Turkey Live at the San Bernardino Swing Auditorium 1972-03-17 Master AUD Reel To Reel mp3 sample

This Wild Turkey show had been sitting on my hard drive for quite some time. The reel had been listed as being from the Swing Auditorium, but there was no date. Fortunately, there were some clues as to when it was.

On the same reel was a Black Sabbath show, also from the Swing. That will be forthcoming at some later date :). Although nothing could be found listing a date at the Swing on Jethro Tulls' MOI site, a date could be found on Black Sabbath Online. The date was confirmed as March 17th, 1972. On that date, the following lineup appeared (and Gawd, wish *I* had been there!)

Wild Turkey
Yes
Black Sabbath

I do not know if I have the Yes show or not. It will take a bit of further digging to see if the Yes reel is from this date, or from another venue.

This appears to be the entire set that Wild Turkey played that evening, with a small cut at the beginning of the last track. The sound quality is miles ahead of my previous Wild Turkey post. As noted, this is a much earlier performance than the Winterland show. In fact, Glenn Cornick is introduced as "having played with Jethro Tull". If anyone of you know which date Mr. Cornick left that group, please let me know.

I have to thank Dime member Tmat44 for providing a beginning to find the track names for this torrent. Through his comments on the previous torrent, I was able to get all the track names straight this time around. Of course, if I got it wrong, please tell me.

Setlist is different than the last torrent, also:

One Sole Survivor
Twelve Streets Of Cobbled Black
Battle Hymn
Intro of Glenn Cornick - Butterfly
Traffic Island Part One
Traffic Island Part two (beginning cut)

No eq or manipulation was performed to this music, aside from having to boost the left channel of the last track.

The band was touring the "Battle Hymn" album at the time this show was taped.
