Resources And Links

Been working on this awhile now and since I can't sticky posts here I might push to the top occasionally. Wasn't quite ready but this might come in handy for my fellow obsessive compulsives since I wanna dial it back for the summer.

Didn't mean to lead off with this recently discovered site but they do have a rule that says links shouldn't be posted across multiple sites. This is a very pop-centric site and I really want to at least put some of that stuff there, probably starting with my Blink-182 and Allison Ponthier anniversaries today:

https://sharemania.us

https://www.guitars101.com/forums/bootlegs.91/

Guitars 101 - very controversial among collectors for the shameless profiteering and affiliate links if not losing control over "their" product. I had no problems with it at least until the dickwad mods start suspending people for mentioning this blog.

Still, they have request forums too, a good place to ask when you come across a dead link here. Once recycled content from the torrent sites, it's now often the first stop for some posters. The affiliate links are annoying but I am not particularly offended considering most of them are originating in the third world and developing countries and likely go toward subsidizing their participation. Once you get a few miles away from Best Buy and Amazon Prime this still gets really expensive really fast.

Torrents are just a pain now but Dime is the original online source for taper generated ROIO recordings and a lot still turns up only on these sites with Dime once being the gold standard but has since seen a precipitous decline in activity. Heavy handed moderation with a lot of arrogance and pettiness or just the natural evolution toward file hosters? Also I have said this time and time again, if you need share ratio assistance, the content here is a free gift to you.

More torrent sites:

http://zombtracker.the-zomb.com/  - a lot less activity but still find exclusives. I still need a lot of the Twisted Road Neil Young DVD's posted here.

https://www.punktorrents.com/

https://taperssection.com - somewhat fading but still a great resource for information, technical assistance secondhand electronics and even shows, though showing up with a gimme gimme attitude usually does not result in the desired response.

Currently aggregating many blogs and resources (including this one) into one spot, if you have or know of a blog you should add it: https://heads.social/@livetapes

This one just popped up:

the DNA lounge streams everything and keeps it up for 2 weeks but also has an archive.org channel with loads of mp3 only recording of the complete nights. Sometimes I grab something and trim and separate the various acts from the house music.

YouTube channels of note:

Redwood Bar & Grill  https://www.youtube.com/@redwoodbar
Streams almost everything. Local bands, a lot of baby bands but the occasional local legend and touring artists such as Nine Pound Hammer and The Hickoids. Be sure to pick the live feature. The best bar in LA for live Rock 'N Roll and also the best fries in town. I hear the drinks are pretty good if that's your thing. Agnostic Front, Throw Rag, CW Stoneking and the numerous Sean Wheeler & Zander Schloss shows among my all time favorites.

  2. I think the people at Lossless Legs might be able to help you. You would have to email them at losslesslegssignup@gmail.com

  3. A way to sticky posts is to post it with a future posting date so it just hangs around there at the top. (Unless they changed the rules and removed that feature?)

    1. That keeps it in draft mode. For example if I were to drop dead today, on Jan 1 2025 my 2024 gig list would still post.

    2. Thanks for mentioning my site. Agreed about G101. Their rules are ridiculous. It makes no sense that they ban any talking of sites like yours.

Are they afraid people might realize there are other sites you can download shows from? Like this little community doesn’t already know.

They kept banning me because I would forget to remove tapers email addresses. I got banned for two weeks for including Charlie Millers email. Charlie freaking Miller! A man whose email is everywhere.

Anyway thanks again for the link. I’ve enjoyed your site for a while.

    4. It's probably boilerplate language mainly to protect the profits and ad revenue of the site owners as if it's a zero sum game. In that respect, you can't even call G101 a community as we can't share resources to help collectors. I don't care about traffic, money, notoriety, only to help other collectors, especially since I have no interest in maintaining links in perpetuity / running an on demand site. That's more suited for 2nd tier collectors (typical G101 users). Even Dime has no problem with it though I don't actually put the link mainly to conform with NAB rules.

And the dickwad mods are likely "volunteers" which makes them even more pathetic than your typical toadies.

    5. I think you are right about them trying to protect their profits, as if they will somehow keep everyone on their site and not go anywhere else. But that's so stupid. This is a very niche hobby filled with hard core collectors. We go everywhere looking for shows. It should be a community. The more we all help each other the more we all win.

I get that a large forum like G101 needs to have some rules. They should stop spammers and if someone was constantly linking to their own blog or whatever without providing any real content for G101 then I can see them getting banned or at least talked to.

But when they are banning anyone from mentioning other sites it gets ridiculous. I know some big time users over there who have been banned for the dumbest stuff.

I do think a lot of the mods are volunteers and a lot of them get an inflated ego with a power trip who then start banning people to make them feel better about themselves.

I'll stop ranting now. That site just drives me crazy sometimes.

    6. Ah I didn't realise a future posting date put it in draft mode, I must be thinking of another platform because I've definitely seen it done somewhere.

I'd agree with the comment about some G101 mods having a power trip. I got a stern telling off and I think a days ban for swearing, despite the same word being easily found in countless other posts. That said, it's a good place just to get things 'out there' so it can be heard by whoever wants to listen.
