Joe Cocker

Currently listening to the most amazing extended reissue of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs And Englishment which is basically several complete shows that comprised the original double album. Now I don't pay attention to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and it holds no validation over my musical tastes, I do not enter into the discussion at all except I am fond of saying we are about 20 years removed from the building getting paved over into a parking lot. Yet I was shocked to find out he is not in it. If I actually cared to take the time to vote (and I didn't) I probably would have chose him over Bad Company. Closely followed by John Belushi, who's iconic interpretation of Joe Cocker's Woodstock performance of With A Little Help From My Friends on Saturday Night Live I see as a respectful homage rather than a spoof.

Highlights are Space Captain, Something and Superstar with lead vocals by Rita Coolidge.

And oh do I regret to not even remembering seeing a single show on the calendar though he was always on tour, much less ever going to see him. He was only a singer and not a songwriter yet his interpretations were always unique, soulful, sincere and often surpassed the original. I prefer this version of INXS's Never Tear Us Apart to the original.

  1. Saw Joe Cocker in 1969 and 1974. He was not well for the 1974 show and kept throwing up on stage.

  2. Another singer you might want to go see/record is Terry Reid. He was Jimmy Page's first choice as a singer for Zep, but he was too young and his mom wouldn't let him tour without a chaperone.

    1. Seen him 3x. All guest spots. The second one was with Joe Perry. The third one I had brought Joe Perry discs for a friend but saw Terry so I gave them to him and he said OH FUCK YEAH and gave me a hug.

  3. Cocker is one of my very favorite vocalists of all time, not to mention a master interpreter of song. If he doesn't make it into the HOF, it would be a crime. We saw Cocker in San Diego somewhere around 1998. By then, he was just coming out on stage in dockers like he was your Father, or something, but man!...What a voice! By then, he was cleaned up and had almost all of his vocal power back. He truly brought the house down that night. And yes, the complete Mad Dogs and Englishmen set with all of the Fillmore East concerts is a masterpiece of incredible live performances. The multiple versions of songs are different enough to keep them interesting, too, which speaks to the prowess of the amazing band that Leon Russell put together.
