Green On Red @ Santa Cruz, CA 1986-04-17 (soundboard)

this show is so great, and after a pretty rough 2021 so far, it makes me feel like I might be starting to enjoy music again. Mostly been just playing the Grateful Dead.

Notes: This was the first show of their tour and they keep saying that they don't quite know a lot of the songs yet. This show was previously uploaded to Dimeadozen from a different audience master and also from a different transfer and mix from these tapes. The Yamaha PM44D records 4 channels on a single side of a cassette at the normal 1 7/8 ips speed when a metallic sensor is stuck to the back of the cassette (see scans included with the share). Special thanks to Roger Buffalo for the enormous amount of help with the setup and the fine soundboard mix. It was so loud back there by the stage that I could not do a mix without feeling like I was causing hearing damage, despite using “dead cup” David Clark headphones that were modified to use Sennheiser HD414 elements.

Also, much thanks to Randall Kane, the now deceased owner of the Catalyst, for supporting the music there for so long. Here’s a link to the trailer for a documentary about the Catalyst that was released in 2010 that includes an interview bit with Randall and gives a bit of an idea of what it was like at The Catalyst back in those days:
